Mud, mud, glorious mud!

This week has seen extremes of running in hot climates in comparison to slipping and sliding in Autumnal mud.

Faith Cowell smashed the “Thames Trot 2019”. This course was from Oxford to Henley on Thames; 48 miles of mud. Faith managed to complete it in 10 hours 39 mins! Out of 190 starters, 45 didn’t finish. Faith reported that (it was a), “tough day but great atmosphere and camaraderie”. Well done to Faith!

In complete contrast to the mud and rain, Caroline Curtis headed over to Montenegro and ran the Podgorica half marathon. Caroline said that the temperature over there was 28 degrees. Caroline explained, “It was so hot. We did not start until 10.30am. We started in Danilograd, treated to children dancing in traditional dress before the run. We ran back to Podgorica between beautiful green mountains”.

Folkestone running club ventured up to Tunbridge for the second cross country race of the season at Somerhill School in Tunbridge. The weather was atrocious with pelting rain, mud and wind, however, this did not dampen spirits. The course was beautiful but challenging, with multiple hills and dips. In the senior women race, Emily Chambers was first back for the club in 29th place and for the men Ian McGilloway was first back in 38th place. The official team standings have not been published, but it was a strong show for Folkestone RC. Full results will be reported next week.

Over in Sussex, saw club members nail the gruelling Beachy Head Marathon and 10k. Diane Parsons ran the full 26.2 miles in 05:20:25 and Sue Elkins completed the 10k in 01:16.56. Both reported that it was incredibly windy, off road and hilly!

Folkestone Parkrun saw club members take first and second position in very windy conditions. Stephen Male came in at 00:17:45 and Andrew Fletcher 00:18:17. First lady back was Nikki Goodwin in 00:22.23.
