FR&AC Race Reports: 7th – 13th July

With it being so hot outside recently, let’s take a quick moment before reading this report; to spare a thought for the blacksmiths in their forges creating all the trophies we won this week.

The conclusion to the much-enjoyed relays, the next generation of FRAC excelling like a spreadsheet, and a successful club trip to New Romney (Named ‘New’ as I’m guessing the old one melted), plus more, so grab a glass of water and some sunscreen and read on…

Starting the week strong, our ever-improving speed demon Guy Slingsby went over to Canterbury to warm up the area for everyone running the relays on Tuesday (It’s a shame we couldn’t stick a classic fake moustache and glasses disguise on him and borrow him for a couple of legs).

Guy pulled a cracking result out of the bag in the 5000m track event by placing first with a time of 17:17, picking up useful practice and experience running tight on track bends along the way.

This was just the start of his week, there will be more mentions later in the report.

Tuesday 8th July – Kent Road Relays: Canterbury

With a sense of victory in the air, and a few potentially close results on people’s minds, FRAC arrived in Canterbury over 60 members strong.

It was a warm evening, but with the course being quite varied with a fair few turning points, all the other runners about encouraging each other and the feeling of competitiveness it really took my mind off the heat, and it felt like the run was over in a flash, with no wrong turns.

The Men’s V40 A Team (Jon Eaton 13:42, Nick Steele 13:27, Nick Bryant 14:06, Simon Ramsay 13:30) flew round the course into 1st place, and won a trophy for the overall competition, Trevor DeVooght also helped them towards that trophy in previous rounds.

This was a strong category for us as the Men’s V40 B team (Derek Matcham 14:42, Andy Wright 14:44, Stuart Sprinks 15:26, Thierry Bal 14:38) also won an overall trophy, after finishing 4th place on the night.

The Men’s V50 A Team led by Mr. PB himself (Paul Bartlett 14:13, Rob Collier 14:32, Darren Crew 14:40) finished second place on the night with a sub-45 combined time and added more silverware to our collection.

The Men’s success didn’t stop there, with the V60 A team (Torben Jessen 15:18, Andrew Noble 14:31, Krzysztof Klidzia 14:32) dominating yet again to secure top spot on the night, and a thoroughly deserved overall trophy.

Men’s V60 B team (Andrew Hadlow 17:27, John O’Hara 19:50, Dave Botting 18:54) had a strong night and kept the silver theme going by adding another trophy, and another category which we won 2 trophies in.

The Women’s V35 A team (Carrie Thomas 16:43, Rebecca Powney 16:13, Kirsty Wilson 16:12) who are all smashing it at the moment took the top spot in their category on the night and brought home more silverware for the club.

The Women’s V45 A Team (Catherine O’Connor 17:01, Linnaea Stockall 16:38, Hazel Millard 17:18) led by The Coach finished second place on the night and rounded off a trophy count of 7 across the event.

A very successful night, and event overall, well done to Henry and Aiden for their efforts over the past few months, and thankyou to Margaret Whitham and Lauren Hart for photography on the night.

Thursday 10th / Friday 11th / Saturday 12th – English Schools Athletics Championships

Tristan Suberu from Folkestone R & AC travelled to Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium with the Kent School’s Athletics team, on Thursday to take part in the English Schools Athletics Championships.

This year being the centenary year of this prestigious competition.

Tristan competed in the Junior Boys 100m, on Friday winning his heat with ease in 11.13.

In Saturday’s final he came 2nd to win the silver medal in 11.15, a fantastic achievement against boys from all around England!

He also won a bronze medal, bringing his team home, in the 4 x 100m with an excellent last leg to gain 3rd place.

Tristan is currently 3rd in the UK for the u15 boys 100m on the national ranking list.

Looking forward to hearing more about this kid in the future, what a superstar!

Sunday 13th July – New Romney 10k

FRAC Team Shot

The general consensus for this one was: It was hot!

It felt like running uphill all the way despite the flat course!

Deborah Parmenter described it as being like running in a furnace, but that didn’t stop her, as Dynamite Deb brought home a V60 First Lady Trophy.

Krzysztof Klidzia also took home the Men’s V60 trophy, following on from his recent relay triumphs.

Paul Bartlett used his invisible hoverboard to race home with an 8 second PB, despite the heat.

Helen Webb finished 3rd in the V45 category, with Matthew Webb running his first ever race in a FRAC top, hopefully the first of many, and welcome to FRAC!

Caron Inder ran her second ever race and took nearly 5 minutes off her PB, and was chuffed as it was ‘blooming hot’.

Maria Fox Felicetti, Catherine O’Connor and Adam Ward all got improved course PBs, with it being Adam’s 1 year anniversary of racing with FRAC, and what a year it’s been!

In the junior race, following in his brother’s footsteps, Hugo Slingsby finished 2nd overall, and was the first boy across the line, these 2 are going to be world beaters!
